It is statutory in every given session that we should have proper orientation for our new students to understand why they have come to the university, this has been very relevant that Students’ Affair Division puts in place an orientation for first year students” he noted. “Again, in
line with the provisions of the Students Union Government University of Calabar Constitution Section 50 sub 1 & 2, it is also requirement that Students’ Affair Division should put in place an independent electoral committee that will conduct election of SUG. It will equally put together a group of an independent observer’s commission that will monitor the election” he opined.
Meanwhile the major task of the independent Observer Commission is to report to the VC through dean the observation of the conduct of the aspirants during the electioneering; report on the SUG election proper and to ensure that the elections are manifestly seen to be free and fair.
As for the CUECO, the Vice Chancellor noted that their task is “to ensure proper conduct of 2012/2013 election SUG Executive, Hall Government, and the Legislative of University of Calabar; to monitor and make sure manifesto and debates are devoid of using dance band and seeking for vote along ethnic line and other vices capable of destructing electioneering processes; to ensure that students who are contesting election are those worthy in character and
learning; to make and enforce other orders of electioneering process for smooth conduct of election and publish their finding at least a week before the election; and to also be good fearing” the VC added.
In response to the appointment, the CUECO chairman Dr. Idaka Idaka accepted the appointment and noted that his re-appointment may not be unconnected to his team performance in the last election and equally thank his team for their great performance in the last election. In his word “I, Dr. Idaka on behalf of the Team is grateful for finding us worthy to re-appoint and appoint respectively. For me, it is an indication of the superlative performance of the last
election. You will recall that sometime last year, we went through this same ritual at the old Senate Chamber that culminated into the conduct of election that was adjourn to be the most freest and most rancor free and violence free election in the history of University of Calabar. For this our second mandate, we want to ensure the Vice Chancellor University of Calabar that we are going to leave no stone unturned and no turn on stone towards ensuring that will hold
The Vice equally noted that “the last SUG election was free and far. Though the government had a spill-over of the time we had lost, ….but because of shortness of time, the EXCO (of the just dissolved administration) may not have achieved all they had set out to, but we don’t want the new EXCO to suffer the same feat” he said. “I must thank the government that is about to go because throughout all their time, there was peace and tranquility. As a result of the peace, our school is now ranked 6th in Nigeria University ranking from 52 if ranked early last year” he gladly noted.
The Vice Chancellor equally used the occasion to announce the changing of the institution Identity Card into a Biometric ID Card which is expected to last for the duration of a person course of study; he said that the ID could be multipurpose which include using it to make withdrawal from the school ATM machine, payment of School charges etc. The Vice Chancellor also noted that the responsibility of this orientation committee is to plan a success orientation for the new students of the school.
In the same vein, the Chairman of the Observing Committee Prof. Ita acknowledged that he is no more novice in the work alongside his team hence they have gone through this ritual sometime last year. He expressed optimism in his team prospect, but equally noted that hence the election (for the first time) has gone digital, lots of equipment will be needed for a perfect delivery and making sure that the work is perfectly done, thus “we want to assure the Vice Chancellor that the election will be free and fair and that we will report what we saw” he summed.
The occasion came to an end with the Vice Chancellor inaugurating the committees and charging them to get down to work, just as he expects the best from them.
