set of leaders in various capacities. The election was full with intrigues and dynamic forces.

The faculty of law, Lagos State University held an historical election never like before. The election for the 2011/2012 academic session was said to be the most competitive and dynamic in the genesis of the students association. From time, the faculty’s election is regarded as the most vibrant not because of the of the money expended during the campaign, but the ins and outs, strategies and the gusto deployed in the process as it is said to be the ‘crème de la crème’ election.

The two weeks election period keeps the Faculty on her toes as everybody is seen to be watchful in all dealings. One more feature of the election is that nobody can predict the results before election- because any slight mistake might be held against the admired candidate. This year’s election was a bolt from the blue as a perceived innocent and green horn defeated the experienced and popular in a landslide victory. “It was again an affirmation of the faculty’s custom” perturbed 500 Level students who pleaded anonymity.

For the election that should have been held towards the conclusion of second semester, 2010/2011 academic session, the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) set up the LASULAWS Independent Electoral Committee (LASULAWS IEC) in line with Section 14(6) of the Society’s constitution on Thursday, 16 February, 2012. The eight man committee composed of two members from each class which includes Abdul-Rahman Yussuf 500 levels as Chairman, Mubarak Tijani 400 the Returning Officer and Alphonsus Inegbedion as the Secretary amongst others.

At its’ inaugural meeting on Friday, 17 February, 2012, the committee lifted ban on all political activities in the faculty. Consequently, the time table, information and procedures for the elections into the Executive and Students’ Representative Council.

After the sales of forms, the committee screened all aspirants. Twenty seven were screened for the SRC two of which were not qualified while fifteen were screened for the Executive. On Wednesday, 26 February and Thursday, 1 March, 2012 the Students Representative Council Election was conducted. At the end of that election, five members emerged from each level except in 500 level where four candidates emerged unopposed.

At 2pm on Thursday, 1 March, 2012 a Presidential debate was held at the Okunnuga Hall. The hall was filled to capacity with students willing to listen to what the four presidential aspirants have in stock for them. At the debate organised by Black and White- a Law student Magazine and monitored by the Electoral committee, with its panellist such as Afizah Atanda, Abigail Ojelabi; former Vice President of LASUSU, Ope Falase and Tomilola Sangoremi all from 500 level, the presidential aspirants administrative credence were put to test from questions bothering on the challenges and prospect of the faculty.

The publisher of Black and White Magazine and the coordinator of the debate Adetunji Akinyemi (a 500 level student) said they organise the debate in order to reinforce the emergence of the best candidate for the faculty. “We believe that if the electorate have sometime with the candidates to see how they stand, they would be able to choose and vote wisely.

On Monday, 5 March, 2012, the manifesto day decided the fate of the aspirants and shows how they stand. Beginning with the office Assistant General Secretary, the candidate with the immaculate promise was applauded and acknowledged. At the turn of the President, the stage took another dimension as the students took apt attention and conscious of each and every word alerted by the candidates.

Yussuf Lawal former Sport Director said “having transformed the sport and ignited sporting activities in the faculty”, he promised a befitting Law Dinner, renovation of the students’ common room, a first of its kind students welfare packages and retreats.

Oladipupo Ajayi a social entrepreneur, the CEO of THE PIX entertainment and the former Public Relations Officer of the Faculty said as a dynamic and young social entrepreneur who have a blend of both world has what it takes to lead the faculty to the next level. He had only two point agenda; Academics and Welfare. According to him, academics borders on student’s results, tutorials and aiding their academic excellence. On extra curricula activities, he promised to facilitate students’ internship at the ministry of justice and legal departments in corporate organisations.

point. He had represented the faculty in various moot and debate competitions. He said “I have represented the faculty in debates, moot and mock trials where the flag of LASULAWS has been held high. Again, I wonder why our students have binary numbers in their result as if we are in department of Computer Science to ameliorate that situation that saddens my mind; we have compiled “Jurist thought on Law of Tort” a summary of reported cases on Law of Tort.”

He promised to; embark on the positive image of LASULAWS in Legal Industry, organise symposium and seminars, publish the LASULAWS Jurist Law Journal, set up a committee on students’ results, set up a counselling unit to address students’ academics and emotional problems, organise a gorgeous Law dinner, organise a southwest regional moot competition to mention a few.

Yaqub Eleto the former General Secretary of the Faculty told the audience that he has done much for the faculty and has contributed tremendously to the policies and administration of the change team that led to the development of the faculty, he said “ I am experienced enough to pilot the affairs to the much awaited promise land.”

He said “I will declare a state of emergency on tutorials, organise law seminars, take students on a retreat to Obudu cattle ranch, declare warfare against littering the faculty by providing fifty waste baskets to be situated at strategic positions, create an avenue where students can meet with their lecturers for an interactive session amongst others.

On Tuesday, 6 March, 2012, the election into the Executive in Council was conducted as planned from 10 am till 2pm. At the of the collation and counting, Kujembola Adeoye defeated three others in landslide victory to emerge the President, Oluwakemi Oyekangun defeated Pelumioluwa Sangosanya with seven votes to emerged the Vice President, Folorunsho Gbenga; PRO, Oluwaseun Tijani Assistant General Secretary. Those who emerged unopposed are Ibukun Bamgbose; Director of Protocol, Abdul Ganiu Salisu; Sport Director, Temitope Rufai; Exchequer, and Kingsley Okhai General Secretary.

The new executives were sworn in at the Students common room on Monday, 13 March, 2012 by Tope Kuti the Chief Justice of LASULAWS High court. After the Executive in Council sworn in, the President Kujembola sworn in the Honourables of the SRC and conducted the election to the principal officers of the House. With the election, Abubakar Musa, Olawale Adeniyi, Jibola Salvador and Olayinka Aregbesola emerged the Speaker, Clerk of the House, Deputy Speaker and Chief Whip respectively.
