Other Online Payment systems that works in Nigeria

Not all online payment methods available that will be suitable for Nigeria but after doing a bit of research, we found out following payment processors would be operational for a Nigerian Merchant and Audience if you intend receiving money online in Nigeria:

  • AlertPay
  • Liberty Reserve
  • 2checkout
  • VTN
  • Softpurse

Apart from Alertpay, Liberty reserve(Lr) and 2checkout which is owned by foreign bigger companies, the others are owned to Nigerian companies and their trading currency is in the naira.

9.   Alertpay (Now Payza)
alertpay_logoThe main currency with which your account will be domiciled is in the US dollars and for alertpay (which was later aquired and now Payza), you could withdraw to your Nigerian domiciliary account. Payza also affords you the ability to receive payments not just from account holders but also from credit card holders who may want to pay you with their credit cards. But in setting an Payza credit card platform, you would have to submit your website for verification and approval. Also it appears credit card users from Nigeria would have to verify their credit cards once for a start before they begin using it on your proposed website.

One good thing about Payza is that it uses Instant Payment notification to alert you or your ipn handler that a payment has been made and you could use it to update your inventory as well as send an email (behind the scenes) to your buyer. Alertpay is now known as Payza.

Payza is the leading global online payment platform that specializes in e-commerce processing, corporate disbursements, and remittances for individuals and businesses around the world. The e-wallet platform provides Payza members worldwide with convenient and flexible loading and withdrawal options, such as localized bank transfers, global bank wires, credit/debit card, checks, prepaid cards, among others.

With over 9 million members, Payza offers its services in 197 countries and in 21 different currencies. Payza is proud to provide its merchants around the globe a complete solution for accepting payments and managing their businesses. In addition, Payza offers foreign exchange services, fraud screening services, email invoicing, mass and single remittances and business management tools. Payza also provides under-serviced and emerging markets with an affordable and convenient way to receive international payments, thereby bolstering local economies in a global marketplace.

10   Fastecash, VTN and Softpurse
vtn_logoThese ones hold your e-currency in the naira and you can easily make payments and withdrawals by just using your bank account. It allows you to receive money from members who hold accounts with the same processor. One dynamic feature of Fastecash is that it also uses an IPN once you receive payment thus enabling you to satisfy customer’s virtual purchases using an ipn handler. We have not used Softpurse yet but it is also a growing means of online payment in Nigeria especially among recharge card online vendors. VTN can be used also for sending and receiving naira online and is also allows you to fund your Graphcard account which could be used for a lot of purposes such as a virtual credit card, US phone number, US address and so on.

Receiving payment online as a Seller
Now assuming you are interested in receiving payment online as a seller, you would need to have something like a store to dispaly your goods, get people to buy and filfil their orders.
Well first in order to be able to receive payment online in Nigeria, you would of course need to have the following:

  • Something to sell
  • An online platform e.g website or vendor
  • Payment processor
  • Deliver orders

Receiving payment online from friends and supporters
While most people who receive a lot of money online do so from their buyers, we should also note that one could receive payment online too from friends and families who may want to support you in one way or the other. This may not require any serious setting up of an online platform like a website so all you may need is an email account and then hold an account with the payment receiver such as Alertpal, lr, softpures and others. You could use the platforms to request for funds from your contacts throughout the world and wherever the payment system is operational. People could send you money in minutes and when such payment comes in, you would normally get an email notification about it. One thing you should also need to do is to make sure that the notification doesn’t go into spam by adding your payment processor’s email into your addresss book. If you receive money in US dollars, you could cash the e-currency into your bank account using bank wire or cheque and if it is naira, you could withdraw with your Savings, Current or Corporate account in Nigeria.

As more and more people in Nigeria get to use the internet, especially with the recent introduction of the Cashless or Cash Lite Policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, chances are that there would be more ways of receiving money online and it would only encourage better service from the existing service providers.

With all this features available and accessible to you, why don’t you get something started online today? With an online business, you don’t need a big store, furniture, large manpower to get online and sell your goods and services to the Nigerian and International audience. Whether you are a full time Student, full time housewife, NYSC Corper, Unemployed youth, Under-employed among others, you should think of a need you can meet, develop it and sell to the global audience of Hundreds of Millions.

  1. Gr8 list. Which of this payment processor is the cheapest to setup and use, that would process payment for me and remit my money straight to my bank account in Nigeria the same day?

    • The setting up, cost and integration process varies. For example, UBA UCollect, Simplepay, Cashenvoy are free.

Hence, to decide which one to use is determined by the existing development platform, shopping cart and availability of integration plugin or document. Please check those factors before selecting the payment gateway website.

We recently signed an MOU with UBA to develop simple, free ecommerce website for customers and integrate UBA UCollect free. This comes with our usual professional support service, user manual and knowledge base for all customers, hence you wouldn’t need to worry about the coding, cart and others – interestingly it’s FREE. You can contact us at, visit to setup your website or inquire further information .

        • Hello Manuels,
UBA UCollect supports virtually all websites that transact in morally standard businesses and services. But some sites that are not supported are websites dealing in pornography, gambling, illegal firearms etc.

  2. Please which of this payment processors can accept international cards, and is it all of them that you have to own a current account before you can operate?

  3. hi please i would like to know can i use the Ucollect or any other of your platform to pay for the facebook ad which i have to set up and its quite urgent. thanks and kindly let me know the best channel to use and also the set up cost. thanks and well done for your comprehensive list. am quite familiar with almost all of them, but then using them for international transaction and the likes of facebook payment is quite a headache. pls kindly advice.

    • Hello Phillip,
You can integrate virtually all of them to facebook to accept local and international payments. But you’ll need the app developed or download it.
You can contact your website developer (or ediaro Webcentre Team for support and integration.

  4. Hi,

I use bigcommerce and they do not have any Nigerian Payment gateways integrated in their software. How can i have any of the above payment gateways integrated in my bigcommerce cart?

  5. Hello
I found your article about the various online payment systems in Nigeria and i want to commend your company for the nice research you have carried out. And i am interested in UBA UCollect.

Please i will like you to tell me the procedures of integrating this online payment system into a website build with Content Management System like WordPress. And how E-Commerce pages can be generated with this payment system.

Are there some particular wordpress themes or pluginns that supports Nigerian payment system? Considering the fact that so many E-Commerce plugins supports only Paypal and Other Credit cards without Nigerians included.

Do they generate their own E-Commerce pages like Shopping Cart and products pages as provided by some wordpress E-Commerce themes/plugins.

Please i want to clarify myself about how they operate.

    • Hello Edikan,

You can integrate UBA UCollect to wordpress and some other Content management systems – all you have to do is develop and integrate plugin that would post the transactions to the UBA UCollect payment gateway. Your website developer should be able to review and advice you on if it would conflict with the Themes or plugins you have installed on your wordpress.

You have multiple options, some would cost you nothing, some little money and some would cost you greatly – depending on your products, services, hosting company and expertise of your website developer.

    • glad to be here, love your reviews on online payment processors great deal, firstly, i would like to make enquiries regarding opening paypal or payza account from Nigeria and successfully operate it without problems receiving payments from abroad safelyand the costs attached .
      Lastly,Happy New Year!

      • Hello Sam,
Unfortunately you cannot receive payment in Nigeria with Paypal; you can only send money.

Meanwhile, you can setup a merchant account on payza to start receiving payment online.

  6. Nice list out there. Am interested in the uba payment gateway. Am working with drupal 7. How much will collect for developing the uba plugin for my site.

  7. Really want to know if you can integrate UBA UCollect to my ngo site for donation,I run a chariity home, and please let me know all I need, kind of account i need to set up and please I want to know if the donation will have limit.

  8. Hello Miko,
You need to open a Corporate account with UBA to be able to integrate UBA UCollect to your NGO website. In addition, the donation does not have any limit.

As discussed on the Telephone, we’ll furnish you with the necessary forms and guide you thru the steps you need to setup your website’; you’ll start accepting donation online realtime in a short time.

  9. Hi,

My need is actually for a platform with a more aesthetically pleasing interface. And of course, one with a good price. UBA’s Ucollect sounds good with it’s free integration option, only thing is I don’t have an account with them and the length of time it takes to open business accounts (I have 2 others now) is just a painful wait. I would like to have this integration done before the 2 week period it normally takes.

I do have a GTBank account and enquired about using their payment platform but it cost N150,000 which my company cannot afford at the moment (and when the time comes that we can afford to pay that amount, I think we would rather put that money into other areas of the business than integration). Did I read clearly that you can have this integration fee waived? Please can I have some more info on this? And if possible, can you share any costs involved.

    • Hello Lola,
We will integrate the UBA UCollect to your website free (depending on the site complexity though). You need to have a UBA Corporate account to use the UBA UCollect – because that’s where the money paid to you will be cleared into.

We have sent you a more detailed email, please check and reply appropriately.

  10. l Urgent reply will be appreciated pls. have an ecommerce web site, but am UK based, and l want people to be able to buy the goods in Nigeria and pay,l see that us recommened UBA UCollect in most of ur reaply, if l open the account wil the bank generate code for me to use for me like the paypal . thanks

    • Hello Joseph,
We recommend UBA UCollect because of their Payment gateway local and international acceptability feature, FREE Deployment; and integration, easy process among others.

Meanwhile, the payment gateway integration is different, please check your email for our response.

  11. What about VoguePay? I’ve been using them for a while now and they are very good. I’m confuss becasue I didn’t see them in your list

  12. Hello Admin,

    Please reply ASAP.

  14. Good-day Admin,

Please, am working on a project that will need an online payment both locally (NIGERIA) and internationally.

Please which of these payments would you suggest and their cost implications.

    • Hello,
All the payment gateways above supports Nigerian Cards.

Meanwhile, for international payment processing, we will suggest UBA Ucollect – they are the only one that has been confirmed to support local and international and it is free.

Meanwhile, Zenith Global pay is also to support International cards, but you might have to reconfirm this if it’s now working properly for international cards. The cost implication is N250,000 (Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira Only).

Simplepay is also supposed to support International cards, because they are powered by Zenith Global Pay for international payment processing. The cost implication for this too is FREE.

  15. I want to accept payment on my website from all over Africa. I will prefer the funds be remitted to my account in the US, to avoid the unstable currency rates of Naira.
We don’t want to have to deal with the hassle of black market.

    Thank you

    • Hello Green,
You have many choices to accept payment and get your money remitted to your Bank account. The choice you select depends on your budget, Business model, how fast you want to receive the fund paid in your Bank account, ability to meet up with their requirements, among other factors.

Hence, please furnish us with more details to be able to give you suggestions.

  28. Thank U for the post. can U recommend for me the easiest and safer means to transfer money from Nigeria to an account in Estonia? Nigeria’s bank Charges to transfer money outside is quite high. Your insight will be most useful.

    • Hello,
We Suggest you check different banks and compare the Bank Charges for transfers.

Alternatively, request if the person you are paying can accept online payment with ATM Card (Visa and Mastercard) and pay them online with your Nigerian Issued, internationally acceptable cards.

    • Yes, many of the payment processors accept Visa Cards, just that the day the fund will be settled to your Bank account varies from processor to processor. Averagely, it takes 24hours to settle funds to your Bank Account.

  29. Thank you for your post. In the future a contractor in North America will be able to use a Mastercard ATM drawn on any bank in Nigeria, yes?

    • Hello,
We don’t know if we get your question right.

But many Nigerian Banks now support local and international cards, including China Union Pay. We don’t know if this answers our question.

I am asking this question because, we already have a corporate account with GTBank, and now that we discover that Ucollect is viable for both local and international web-transaction, we are asking to know if we can begin the integration process after we have open a corporate account with UBA? Or are there other things to be done, and fees to be paid? Kindly let me know other processes outside having a corporate account with UBA?

    • You need to have a corporate account with the bank, have a website with a standard SSL installed on it. UBA doesn’t charge any other fee for UCollect.

    • Hello Emmanuel,
Most of them don’t offer re-curring payments, we suggest you ask them directly – should incase they’ve made any update in recent time. Don’t hesitate to share the information with us if you get a feedback.

  38. This is a great research work.

But I think the operators of some of these mobile payment systems need to make their apps compatible with other phones with GPRS.

Mobile payment apps shouldn’t just be for the users of smart phones.

It is when this is done we can actually say user experience is met.

    • Hello Puja,
We don’t know much about elot pay, please make more inquiry about them.

There are many options, but you can try the likes of 2checkout – because of their global outlook.

Unfortunately, this review is targeted for Nigerians by Nigerians, other alternative payment processors will also be available for people in that region if you conduct more indept research.

  45. Hi,

I observed that the GTPay is a good gateway. But, I observed that the gateway has payment issues, where customers are not able to make payments successfully. Also, it selects cards. Why and what would you suggest and how can you help me?

    • Hello Chris,
Many issues can cause a payment gateway not to accept a card:
      1. Some Bank Cards might not be activated for online transactions,
      2. Card details might not be entered completely, e.g. GTBank Mastercard and some Banks write the last 4digits number on the Interswitch reflective logo which some customer don’t see.
      3. Some cards require Verfied by Visa – VISA CARDS, Mastercard Secure Code – MASTERCARD and Safetoken/Hardware/Soft Token – for INTERSWTICH cards, some customers don’t know about this.

      Among other issues.

Hence, we suggest you put simple FAQ or likely issues customers can have on your website where customers can see it when making payment. You can even make it in form of a picture with arrows pointing to the likely issues – to make them more informed.

  46. One is a scam, and till now they ran away with my huge $$$ and no response again from them what so ever. 54. Good morning, I do like to know about 3D secured or OTP, most of all time I try to shop online with my Naira Debit Card, I always encounter problem doing that With OTP verification Code, before getting my OTP text message most of time I run out of time, my debit card was once blocked for that, is there a secured payment gateway that does not ask for one time password.
    Please advice.

    • Dear Oluwafemi, most of the Nigerian payment processors use 3d secured or OTP as a second level of security for your safety. In addition, selecting payment processors is the work of the merchant selling the product/service and not for you to choose. Hence, you need to know how to register and use the OTP.

What is the Interswitch Safetoken Service?
This is a system that generates a 6-8 digit One-Time-Password (OTP) whenever a transaction is initiated via the Interswitch Web Payment Platform.
The customer’s card would have been previously linked to his phone number for him/her to utilize this service. At the point of initiating a transaction, the customer may receive an OTP via hardware/software devices, grid cards or SMS and then he is required to input this OTP on the web payment platform in order to complete the payment.

The OTP is authorized by the Strong Authentication Server residing either at the switch or at the issuing bank and the transaction is completed as required.

How can I register for the Safetoken service on the ATM?
To register for the service, follow the prompt
Go to the nearest ATM, and insert your ATM card
Input your 4-digit PINand press Enter
Select your bank account type eg Savingsor Current
Select the ‘Quickteller’ option from the ATM menu screen
Select ‘Pay Bills’ from the Quickteller menu list on the ATM screen
Select ‘Others’ for the bill payment menu option list
      Enter ‘322222”as the Biller Code
Enter your Phone Numberas the Customer Reference Number and select ‘Proceed’
You will get a display “Do you want to make this payment?” Amount Due:N1
DO NOT edit the amount to be paid
      Click on “Pay amount due”
You will then get a confirmation page indicating the registration was successful

What do I do when I do not get an SMS with an OTP after requesting for one?
Send a mail to for assistance in making sure you get your OTP or dial a short code *322*0# to proceed to getting an OTP.

For more information, visit the interswitch Safetoken faq at:

  70. Hi. Thanks for this insightful article. I have a question. I have a website I want to use in selling my novels (ebooks) but I’m so confused which payment portal to use. I can’t open a corporate account in any bank in Nigeria. Lastly, is it possible to use one of the above payment portal and also have that of recharge card payment on the site. Thanks for your response

    • Dear Doris,
You need a Corporate account to use virtually all Nigeria payment processors (except cashenvoy we know accept personal accounts).

Meanwhile, we don’t know what you mean by recharge card payment, please explain.

  71. Hi. Thanks for your response. I mean like how they do it on okadabooks. You pay with a recharge card pin instead of your debit card. I think they use etisalat network for that

    • Hello Doris,
We have contacted etisalat on okadabooks etisalat recharge pin payment option.
Unfortunately, etisalat replied that they are not aware of this service and even advise that we should not not enter our recharge PIN for any online transaction.
      So please take note

Afterwards, you will do the payment integration to your APP or website.

    • Hello,

  82. Hi guys, for customers to purchase goods via uba gateway, must they be registered with uba’s program… or its just simply buy goods and check out…

    • No. The customer only need to have a Mastercard or Visa from any bank in Nigeria. If UBA activate you for International card processing, you will be able to receive Nigeria and International Visa and Mastercard.

  83. Great! I am currently working on an eCommerce site and I want Credit Card payment option enabled, is that possible with any of this without having an SSL Certificate on the site. If it is possible, how can I integrate it with the site?

I am using the WordPress CMS platform and the woocommerce plugin by woothemes.

    • There are many payment processors that doesn’t require an SSL to receive payments online. To select another option, your choice of payment processor can be determined by many factors, among which are target audience (local or international), deployment cost, transaction charges, customer service, value added services among others.

For instance if your target audience is receiving payment from Nigerian customers, we advise you go with Interswitch Webpay. Meanwhile, if you are thinking of selling to Nigerian and International audience, you can go with Stanbic IBTC Bluepay CIPG and MIGS (more description of them at Top 10 Online Payment Processing Platforms in Nigeria 2015 available at ).

We can help you with a fast tracked deployment processing, technical and professional support among others FREE of charge (for our partners payment gateways). If also required, we Offer discounted and/or FREE integration on some websites – if you send us your website for us to review. Let’s know which payment processor you need and we will forward you the forms and other required information.
