Vacant Assistant Professor Position, Molecular Microbial Ecology Group, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen

Applications are invited for a position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen. The assistant professor will join the Molecular Microbial Ecology Group and is expected to have experience in metagenomic and metatranscriptomic sequencing and sequence data handling for a research project on microbial diversity in soil. In addition, the candidate will contribute to the research and relevant teaching in the group, including supervision of students. He is also expected to function as “super user” on the FLX- and HiSeq machines. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.

Research project

Microorganisms encompass by far the largest resource of metabolic and genetic diversity encountered on Earth. They are the greatest source of biotechnological innovation, and natural environments hold a large pool of microbial enzymes with a commercial potential. However, a majority of this natural treasure remains unknown and is believed to be untapped. Also, a major part of the microbiota in natural ecosystems is not culturable. Therefore, the invention of the next generation sequencing is truly exciting, as its sequencing power will enable microbiologists to explore the true bacterial biodiversity and metabolic activities at a hitherto unseen depth. Hence, we will use this technology to resolve the immense bacterial diversity and metabolic activities in soil by sequencing of amplified 16S rRNA gene, genomic DNA and expressed RNA extracted from total microbial communities in various natural environments to characterize the complex bacterial community and metabolic pathways present there.
