Grant information:

The grant is usually awarded for a maximum of 2 years for a Master’s degree programme .University of Groningen Academy Square

The grant covers the tuition fees plus the costs of international travel, subsistence, books, and health insurance.  For specific information, please check the rules & regulations [PDF].

Additional information

Eligible candidates:     Criteria for approval are: (a) academic excellence, shown by academic performance and may be confirmed by letters of recommendation from university professors; (b) contribution of candidate’s education in terms of strengthening the scientific capacity in the candidate’s home country; (c) perspectives to a long-term linkage between the home institution and the University of Groningen

Extra criteria for PhD candidates are: applicant should be employed by a research institute of university in one of the listed countries and receive an income from the home institution, application should be supported by this organization, the University of Groningen must be able to provide an academic supervisor who will be responsible for the scientific supervision of the research


Deadline:

Applicants need to meet the deadline of the Master’s programmes. Application forms for Master’s programmes can be found through the website or Admissions Offices . Application deadline for the scholarship is 22 February.

Application:

Applications for student scholarships can be submitted by students from one of the eligible countries for a Master’s or equivalent programme at the Universityof Groningen.

 

Master’s degree programmes: A step-by-step application guide

1. First the candidate should apply for admission to a study programme at theUniversity of Groningen .

2. When the candidate applies for this admission, he or she must indicate on the application form that his/her study performance is excellent and that he/she wishes to be nominated for a Eric Bleumink Fund scholarship.

3. If the study programme agrees with the candidacy for a EBF scholarship,they will send a standard application form including the motivation of the candidate to the Board of the Eric Bleumink Fund prior to 1 March. Per studyprogramme only two candidates can be nominated.

4. The Board of the Eric Bleumink Fund will take a decision during their meeting in March.

5. The studyprogramme and the candidate will both be informed on the decision taken by the Board.

6. If a candidate is selected the coordinator and the candidate will have contact on the details of his or her arrival. If necessary he/she can contact the Board of the Eric Bleumink Fund for extra assistance.

Waverley – African Studies Centre Joint Scholarship

The Waverley Fund was established in 2001. It aims to assist academically excellent students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have shown the potential to make a significant contribution in their future careers.

The African Studies Centre was launched in October 2004, and attracts extremely high quality graduates. The Centre is a unit of the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies (SIAS), a department in the Social Sciences Division.

One scholarship will be awarded in 2012-13 for an MSc in African Studies.

Am I eligible?

Candidates should be applying to start an MSc in African Studies. Deferred students are not eligible.

Eligible candidates must be ordinarily residents in the sub-Saharan Africa. Applicants must intend to return to their home country at the end of their studies.

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of outstanding academic merit.

What does it cover?

100% of university and college fees, and a grant for living expenses of £13,590 p/a (including return flights).

Award is made for the full duration of a student’s fee liability for the agreed course.

How do I apply?

All eligible candidates that apply for the MSc in African Studies by Application Deadline 2: 20 January 2012 will be considered.

You do not need to submit a separate application form.

How will I know if I have been successful?

Successful candidate will be notified by email by mid April 2012.

WHAT IS THE CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME?
The Chevening Scholarship Programme is a prestigious awards scheme that funds international postgraduate students who want to study in the UK for one academic year.
Funded by the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office and administered by the British Council, the scheme operates in over 150 countries and annually provides funding for over 2,300 scholars.

WHO CAN APPLY?
You can apply for a Chevening scholarship if:

  • You are a postgraduate student who can prove your academic success and who has already begun a career in your chosen field.
  • You you have between two and five years working experience (depending on the country you are applying in), with an excellent track record illustrating your achievements and your potential to use the skills gained during your scholarship to make a difference in your country.
  • You have achieved an excellent mark for you undergraduate degree and can provide a transcript of your academic record. Specific academic requirements are available from the British Council offices in your country.
  • You are 21 years or older (there are upper age limits for specific countries so please ensure you check this during your applications process).
  • You are a resident in your country when you apply and provide your birth certificate (with translation).
  • You must have good English language skills (most UK Higher Education institutions require a minimum IELTS of 6.5for admission into postgraduate courses).

Applications are only open at certain times of the year and differ per country. The dates will be advertised here on this site and/or in the local newspapers.

Although applicants for other courses (as varied as counter-terrorism, religion and energy/climate change) may be considered. You are expected to show a commitment to return to your country, where you will contribute to the country’s socio-economic development using the new skills and knowledge acquired during your stay in the UK.

HOW TO APPLY?
You will need to submit the following documents to us when the application season is open:
Complete the application online
Birth certificate (with translation).
Supporting letters from two referees.
Photocopies of academic certificates.
Transcript/record of exams that you have passed.
