Rashidi Yekini is Dead

Rashidi Yekini, one of the finest former Nigeria Super Eagles football striker is dead! He died today in a private hospital at Ibadan. He will be buried in his home town tomorrow according to Muslim rites at – Ira, Oyun Local Government Area (near Offa) Kwara State. He was aged 49. Some Few Months ago, around March 8, 2011, it was over the News that Mr Rashidi Yekini has been sick for a while and needs some assistance.

Late Rashidi Yekini was born on 23rd October, 1963 at Kaduna, Nigeria. He is a two-time African footballer of the year winner. He Scored Nigeria’s Ever FIFA World Cup goal, clutching the goal net thereafter. He Scored 37 goals for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, in 70 appearances. Yekini is the National record Goalscorer and he would be remembered for his iconic celebration after Nigeria’s first ever goal at the 1994 World Cup against Bulgaria and the 1998 World Cup. Additionally, Yekini also helped the Super Eagles win the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, where he also topped the goal charts, and participated at Olympic level, in Seoul 1988.

He started his professional career in the Nigerian league, he later moved to Côte d’Ivoire to play for Africa Sports National. He proceeded  to Portugal and Vitória de Setúbal, where he experienced his most memorable years, eventually became the Portuguese first division’s top scorer, in 1993–94, as his performances (32 matches, 34 goals) earned him the title of African Footballer of the Year in 1993, the first ever from the Nation. Afterwards, in the 1994 summer, Rashidi Yekini was bought by Olympiacos FC, but did not get along with teammates and left. His career never really got back on track, not even upon a return to Setúbal, which happened after another unassuming spell, in La Liga with Sporting de Gijón. He successively played with FC Zürich, Club Athlétique Bizertin and Al-Shabab Riyadh, before rejoining Africa Sports. In 2003, at 39, he returned to the Nigerian championship with Julius Berger FC. In 2005, he returned home alongside former national teammate Mobi Oparaku to Gateway FC.
